May is National Walking Month: Small steps can make a big difference

May is National Walking Month, a chance to celebrate one of the simplest and most accessible ways to support our wellbeing.

Walking does not need to be fast, intense or part of a strict fitness routine to be beneficial. A short walk around the block, a gentle stroll in nature, or simply choosing to move a little more during the day can all make a positive difference.

At Safety Net, we know that healing and wellbeing are not always about big changes. Often, recovery begins with small, steady steps.

Why walking can help

Walking can support both physical and emotional wellbeing in many ways. It can help to:

  • Reduce stress and tension
  • Improve mood and energy levels
  • Support better sleep
  • Create moments of calm and clarity
  • Increase confidence through small, achievable goals
  • Encourage connection with nature and surroundings
  • Provide space to think and breathe

These small moments can have a powerful impact over time.

Why this matters in trauma recovery

For people who have experienced trauma, stress or abuse, wellbeing can sometimes feel overwhelming. High-pressure goals or demanding routines may feel out of reach.

Walking can be a gentler place to begin.

It is flexible, low-pressure and can be adapted to individual needs. It can be done alone for quiet reflection, with a trusted person for connection, or in nature for grounding.

Walking may also help regulate the nervous system. Rhythmic movement, fresh air and noticing the environment around us can all support a greater sense of safety and calm.

That is why walking can be such a powerful tool for many people in recovery.

Introducing: Walk With Safety Net 💙

To mark National Walking Month, we are inviting our community to join our Walk With Safety Net challenge.

This May, take steps for your own wellbeing while helping raise funds for people recovering from domestic abuse, sexual violence, exploitation and trauma.

You choose your goal. That might be:

  • A short daily walk
  • Walking 30 miles during May
  • Weekly mindful walks
  • Walking to work more often
  • Moving in a way that suits you

Every step counts.

How your support helps

Funds raised will help Safety Net continue providing trauma-informed support, therapy, recovery services and safe spaces for adults, children and young people across Cumbria.

By taking part or donating, you are helping others take steps towards healing too.

Join the challenge

Whether you walk alone, with friends, with family or with your dog, we would love for you to be part of it.

Share your walks with us 💙

We’d also love to make this a shared community experience.

If you have a favourite walking route, a peaceful spot, or a place that helps you feel calm and grounded, we’d love for you to share it with us.

You can send us your recommendations, photos or reflections by email or tag us on social media. We may share some of these to help inspire others throughout the month.

Whether it’s a short local walk, a nature trail or somewhere meaningful to you, your suggestions could help someone else take their first step.

Walking is a reminder that progress does not always need to be dramatic.

Sometimes healing looks like putting one foot in front of the other.

One small step at a time 💙
