Regifting Beauty: How One Campaign Restores Dignity for Survivors This Winter
As Christmas approaches, many of us will receive toiletries, skincare sets, or beauty gifts that – if we’re honest – we may never use. But for survivors of domestic and sexual abuse, those same items can provide something far more meaningful: a moment of care, dignity, and confidence at a time they need it most.
That’s why Safety Net is proud to support the Regifting Beauty campaign, created by VL Aesthetics in Carlisle. Now entering its sixth year, the campaign invites people to donate new, unopened toiletries, skincare products, perfumes, aftershaves, and beauty gifts. These items are then redistributed to survivors across Cumbria and beyond.
Why This Campaign Matters
For survivors rebuilding their lives after trauma, small acts can have a powerful impact. Receiving a quality skincare item or favourite scent can remind someone that they are valued at a time when confidence and self-worth may be at their lowest.
Adding to this, the festive period brings a rise in domestic abuse.
In Cumbria alone, reported domestic abuse offences rose from 506 in November to 541 in December last year — a 7 percent increase.
During a time when most people exchange gifts, many survivors are struggling simply to feel safe.
This campaign bridges that gap, reminding survivors that their community sees them, values them, and cares.
The campaign supports women, men, and young people, recognising that domestic and sexual abuse affects all genders — and that everyone deserves dignity, care, and support.
A Community Coming Together
The generosity shown each year has been extraordinary. Last year alone, the campaign received over 30 large boxes of high-quality products — some regifted, others bought specially for donation. Many donors shared that they were eager to support a campaign that was both meaningful and accessible.
Even children have taken part, offering items and handwritten notes to remind survivors they’re not alone.
